Happy (Late) Holidays!

It’s been a long time since we wrote, and lots has happened. We spent Thanksgiving up in Boise with both of our families. We had a lot of fun spending time with everyone there, and Luke had a great time with his grandparents. Highlights of the trip included the festival of trees (Luke loved the bright lights and ornaments), seeing “New Moon” with Heather, Mom, and Megan (sometimes the bad movies are as fun to see as the good ones) and going to way too many Boise restaurants that we miss in Provo.

Thanksgiving meal(s) were fabulous, and Nic had an adventure the day after Thanksgiving with Megan (waking up early when I could sleep in seemed blasphemous). Chad worked at Pronto Pup that day (which opened at 5 a.m.) so Nic and Megan went and got Pronto Pups at that ungodly hour. They didn’t even throw up. By far the best part of the trip though was that we both got to sleep through the night once. Debbie graciously offered to watch Luke and gave us a night at the Anniversary Inn for our second anniversary. The room was an ice cave filled with giant penguins J Loved it.

Luke’s new milestones over Thanksgiving included realizing that he had hands. It was funny to watch him learn how to use them (they mostly seemed like little uncoordinated claws at this point) and start to really be excited about toys and things around him. He went to his four-month appointment, weighing in at 16 lbs, 27 inches tall.

They told us maybe he had a sinus infection (to explain why he wasn’t sleeping well) and gave us antibiotics (couldn’t hurt to give them to him, anyway, they said). We later learned that this was a bunch of crap since apparently the sinuses aren’t even open until the second year of life. And yes, it did hurt to give him antibiotics because he pooped like 20 times a day for all 10 days. We need a new pediatrician.

Skip ahead to Christmas, since I can’t remember what happened in between the two holidays anymore. We had a great time at Christmas as well, and enjoyed a nice break from school for Nic, with no homework hanging over his head. This was a crazy semester for him, and we were both happy to put it behind us. We just enjoyed spending time with both of the families, playing games, eating more than necessary, and playing dodgeball (a Christmas tradition. For me it’s mostly a tradition of getting beaned in the head, but it was fun to see everyone). Christmas was great, and Luke got spoiled by both sets of grandparents and has some fun new toys. His favorite is the Exersaucer they got him.

He gets pretty worked up playing in it, and if I’m walking by it, he lunges toward it to try to get to it. Other highlights of Christmas included going out to dinner at the Mona Lisa for my birthday (which is today!), making pralines (they were the best thing I have ever eaten), and reading the book “The Hunger Games” (which offered endless parallels to our lives, oddly enough).

We took Luke to a pediatrician in Boise that one of my mom’s friends recommended, since ours dropped the ball and the sleep situation is still dismal. He thought Luke might be having issues with reflux, and it kind of makes sense looking back at his issues with eating, how burpy he is, and how much he hates being flat on his back—and his runny nose, which he had for an unusually long time and still had issues with (not a sinus infection, but a possible symptom of reflux). So anyway, we got him on some antacids, and the runny nose cleared up quickly and has been good ever since. He’s taking better naps in the crib and is doing a tad bit better at night, so we’ll keep seeing. Cross your fingers for us.

Current highlights with Luke: he’s laughing a lot now. It’s really cute, kind of this really deep awkward chuckle that makes me laugh. He’s getting good with using his hands now and is anxious to pick up/grab anything and everything and stuff it into his mouth. When he sees something he wants (every five seconds or so) he lunges in that direction, reaches out his hands and throws all his weight into it.

He’s also sitting up by himself now, and holding onto things standing up (somewhat unreliably, but still!) He’s definitely gotten into the mom/dad preference phase, and does the whole “lunging/throwing body weight” thing when taken away. He’s a sweet little boy, and it’s fun to see him interact with us more all the time.

I think that’s it for now, cio!
